A Chicago health care company, KAREFIRST MANAGEMENT, and its former owners will pay nearly $2 million to the United States and the States of Illinois and Indiana to resolve a civil lawsuit arising from the submission of false claims to Medicare and Medicaid.

Whistleblowers first brought allegations against KAREFIRST MANAGEMENT, an independent nurse practitioner group, saying they had developed their own proprietary patient charting software and required their nurse practitioners to use it, despite knowing that it resulted in fraudulently upcoded claims being submitted to and paid by Medicare and Medicaid.

Whistleblowers were represented in part by David Chizewer and Roger Lewis of Goldberg Kohn.
